Amela Svraka - Marketing

What was your first job after graduation? With what have you been working since then?
My first job after I graduated from the Master’s Programme in Business and Management – Strategic Marketing Management, was at the Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation. I worked there for two years as a Ministry Secretary and managed international travels. In January 2014 I began as a press assistant for Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt at the Cabinet Office and I stayed there throughout that election year. After the election I returned to the Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation and began working for the Minister for Enterprise and Innovation, Mikael Damberg.

What is your current job? What work tasks do you have?
I work at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, at the Office for the Minister of EU Affairs and Trade. I work at the office of the Secretary to the Minister of EU Affairs and Trade, Oscar Stenström. A lot of my time is spent on planning upcoming international trips, prepare for incoming visitors and other administrative tasks. I’m a non-political governmental official.

When you look back at your Master’s education, which of the knowledges that you obtained are the most useful for you today in your work?
What have been most useful to me are the analytical thinking, the importance of structure and organization, and the international aspects. The 30 optional credits that we had during the third semester of the Programme have been very important to me. During this semester I did an Internship at the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago. It was very educational and developing.

What are your strongest memories from your time as a Student in Uppsala and at Ekonomikum?
My classmates, great professors, a thorough and broad international education which offered good possibilities with connections in the work life.

Based on your experience, would you choose the same Programme today, and why?
Yes, definitely. It is a broad and international Programme that prepares the students for the working life.

What advice would you give to the future Master’s students that will study the same Programme as you did?
Be engaged and structured. Manage your time. If possible, get a job alongside you studies, and take the opportunity to travel abroad for studies or an Internship. Attend the seminars and lectures that the Uppsala Business and Economics Student Association arrange. That is an opportunity to meet Businesses and employers. Send in your CV to the employers that interest you, even if they aren’t recruiting right now. Be active and extrovert. And most of all, value your time as a student at Uppsala University.

Based on your experience, would you choose the same Programme today, and why?
My master studies gave me a great foundation. The master program had a good balance between theoretic knowledge, with a lot of relevant and current academic literature, as well as practical cases in collaboration with companies where we got to apply our theoretical knowledge on real life business problems.

What advice would you give to the future Master’s students that will study the same Programme as you did?
Don't stress so much! Enjoy your master studies. It's a great time of your life. Use the opportunity to do an internship. Do some research, a lot of interesting companies offer unpaid internships. It's a great opportunity to get professional experience and business contacts. My first employer was the company where I did my internship during my master program.

What advice would you give to the future Master’s students that will study the same Programme as you did?
Theories are good to know but make sure to get some practice using it. The labor market is tough for someone who just graduated and don’t have a lot of experience. If you can, combine your studies with work within the sector that you want work in after graduation, it really helps a lot.
