Examination

An examination, or exam, is an oral or written test that you take during or at the end of a course to demonstrate the knowledge you have acquired in the subject. If you fail to pass an exam you are able to try again at a later date by sitting a retake exam.

Registration to the written examinations

You must always register to the examination – regardless of whether it is an ordinary examination or a re-examination. You register through the Student Portal no later than 12 days before the exam. You are strongly recommended to register to the exam as soon as it is possible to do so and not wait until the deadline. If you have not been registered you are not allowed to take the examination. If you need any help with the registration you can contact us at our Student Service Office, no later than 12 days before the exam.

When you get to the examination hall you need to bring a valid identification card. The written exams are anonymous, which means that you will get an anonymity code so the teacher who is marking the exam cannot see who has written the exam.

Here you can find some general information regarding the written examinations at Uppsala University.

How to see your results and answers

When the results from the course have been reported you can see these in the Student Portal. After the results have been reported you can collect your written answers at Ekonomikum's reception (please remember to bring your identification card). Your answers will be saved for two years, if you haven’t collected them.

Reconsideration of a decision on a grade

If you find that you have received an incorrect grade or that the decision on a grade has been made in an improper way, and if you have sent in a request considering reconsideration to the examiner, without getting it reconsidered, you can contact the Ombudsmen for grading issues at Uppsala University. Ombudsmen for grading issues investigate if the assessment process has been followed properly and they are two teachers with extensive experience in the examination appointed by the Vice-Chancellor, in cooperation with the representatives from the student unions. Please note that the Ombudsmen cannot change any decisions on a grade taken by the examiner.

If you report your case to them, they investigate the process and leave a written opinion to the department. Grades can not be appealed to a higher court - it is the examiner who sets the grades and can change them. The ombudsmen for grading issues can, however, investigate if the assessment process has been followed properly.

Application form for reconsideration of a grade

The form is handed in to the reception desk at Ekonomikum.

Here you find some more information about the Ombudsmen for Grading Issues.

New Course Literature

Please note that the course literature can be changed regularly, in form of new editions, books and articles. Therefore we recommend that you complete the course the same term as you started it. That the course literature has changed is not a reason to require an extra exam.

Cheating and Plagiarism

According to the Higher Education Ordinance Disciplinary measures may be invoked against students who:

  1. by prohibited aids or other means attempt to deceive during examinations or when academic work is otherwise assessed
  2. disrupt or obstruct teaching, tests or other activities within the framework of studies at the institution of higher education

If an invigilator suspects that a candidate is attempting with unauthorised materials or items or in some other manner to deceive or cheat during the examination he/she will note down the candidate’s name and the names of any witnesses, request the candidate to hand over any evidential material and make a written report of the incident to the teacher responsible for the examination. The Institution will then submit a formal report to the Vice-Chancellor, who can refer the matter to the Disciplinary Board. The decision of the board may be to issue a warning or to suspend the student from studies for a certain period. Here you can read more about Cheating and Plagiarism.

Finishing a discontinued course

When a course is discontinued it can still be possible to finish it by doing an exam.
